Little Fawn, Oceanside

18 Tables

The tables needed to remain thin and elegant while maintaining their shape over time. The solution was a keyed support slid into the underside of the table, housed mechanically within the wood without glue or fasteners, allowing the material to expand and contract through seasonal swings in humidity. The tops were also laminated from tongue-and-groove boards, resulting in a thin, elegant surface capable of withstanding years of abuse. Finished in organic Odie’s Oil, the tables were designed to be perpetually renewed rather than sealed beneath traditional polyurethane or conversion varnish.

4 Benches

The benches are composed of thick oak slabs with sliding dovetails running through the underside supports beneath the upholstered pads. Strong enough for the heaviest patrons and refined enough for those with keen eyes, the benches are informed by the De-Sede DS-80 Daybed, complete with tight upholstery from Rex Copeman.

Banquette

The walnut shiplap accent wall and benches combine to form a continuous banquette. The tight shiplap carries a midcentury sensibility, adding warmth and rhythm to the space. Blond sapwood moves through the darker walnut like visual jazz, mimicking the play between light oak, and black leather on the benches below.

Floating Shelves

Large floating walnut shelves were constructed by face-laminating 8/4 walnut into imposing masses that now serve as the backdrop to the bar. Almost bewilderingly heavy, yet absent any visible support structure, they lend a quiet elegance to the display of bottles and glassware.

Details

Throughout the space, small architectural details reinforce the project's broader design language. Tapered walnut fins beneath the bar introduce rhythm and visual lightness, breaking up the long elevation with a sculptural cadence inspired by midcentury furniture. Built into the original bar, a custom walnut enclosure houses the McIntosh C48 Audio Control Center, treating the restaurant's hi-fi system as a piece of architecture rather than equipment. The detail reflects the owner's conviction that music is central to the atmosphere of the space.
